HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: From 2005-2007 there were 411,000 households in Pinellas County. The average household size was 2.2 people.

Families made up 57 percent of the households in Pinellas County. This figure includes both married-couple families (43 percent) and other families (14 percent). Nonfamily households made up 43 percent of all households in Pinellas County. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.

NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Eleven percent of the people living in Pinellas County from 2005-2007 there were foreign born. Eighty-nine percent was native, including 29 percent who were born in Florida.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 36 percent; Sales and office occupations, 30 percent; Service occupations, 16 percent; Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 9 percent; and Construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations, 9 percent. Eighty-three percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 11 percent was Federal, state, or local government workers; and 6 percent was Self-employed in own not incorporated business workers.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Eighty percent of Pinellas County workers drove to work alone from 2005-2007, 9 percent carpooled, 2 percent took public transportation, and 5 percent used other means. The remaining 5 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 23 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Pinellas County was $43,591. Seventy-one percent of the households received earnings and 22 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Thirty-six percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $14,503. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: From 2005-2007, 12 percent of people were in poverty. Sixteen percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 10 percent of people 65 years old and over. Eight percent of all families and 23 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS: From 2005-2007, Pinellas County had a total of 498,000 housing units, 18 percent of which were vacant. Of the total housing units, 54 percent was in single-unit structures, 36 percent was in multi-unit structures, and 10 percent was mobile homes. Fourteen percent of the housing units were built since 1990.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: From 2005-2007, Pinellas County had 411,000 occupied housing units - 292,000 (71 percent) owner occupied and 118,000 (29 percent) renter occupied. Five percent of the households did not have telephone service and 8 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Thirty-five percent had two vehicles and another 11 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $1,392, nonmortgaged owners $458, and renters $826. Forty-five percent of owners with mortgages, 22 percent of owners without mortgages, and 51 percent of renters in Pinellas County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
